Supporting Mums – Making a Difference

happy sleepy babyWhen I first began my journey as a baby massage and baby yoga instructor, nearly two years ago now, I had in my mind’s eye the help and support I would be giving to babies through the power of positive touch.  I knew through my studies that I could teach parents how to help their babies through conditions such as colic, constipation, restlessness and even teething.  I never even considered that my classes would become a support for mums too.

During the first few months of practising, I saw that by showing mums how to massage their babies and help relieve certain conditions, they were beginning to feel empowered that they had the skills to settle and soothe their little ones. It really began to shine through by the end of the courses. They would come to the next session and tell me with pride that their babies had pooed after the last massage session and rave about the heel press or that their baby had slept for two hours after baby yoga.  The mums were also experiencing the release of oxytocin (the ‘feel good’ hormone) during massage and yoga and I witnessed them relax throughout the sessions.  I realised how much it meant to me that I was making a difference to these mums’ lives as well as helping their babies.

I began to encourage mums to chat to each other during the sessions in the hope that they would make friends and once the course had finished they would still have a support network in each other.  I am absolutely delighted to see that friendships have been in made in my sessions and have blossomed.

However, it was not until recently, when I was involved in the maternal mental health awareness week that a couple of mums shared their stories with me.  To be told by one mum that coming to her first baby yoga session actually changed her life as she laughed, bonded with her baby and made friends at a time when she felt alone and suffering with depression.  Her story made me realise just exactly how much of a support network the sessions are.

Another mum shared her experience as to how nerve wracking attending a new baby group was for her.  I was delighted to read her testimonial, that she found the sessions welcoming, friendly and put her at ease. This is exactly the environment that I strive to create.  I want all mums to arrive to my sessions feeling relaxed and know that they will not be judged.

It is this passion that I have for supporting mums, which has spurred me on to bring Love Creates Love to the Yorkshire Coast.  I will soon be creating a nurturing group for mums where they feel supported and connect with one another whilst being with their babies. I am aiming to set up this group very shortly and hopefully it will make a difference to those mums who just need to feel that they are not alone in their journey in parenthood.
