Baby showers are a great way to celebrate the forthcoming birth of a baby and celebrate motherhood. They are a time for sharing, giving and making a women feel part of a community. Pregnancy, birth and motherhood is very different around the world. Most people in Malawi live below the poverty line. Sadly many women give birth alone and many die in childbirth leaving orphans behind. In terms of prospects for children, 1 child in 10 will die before they are 5 years old and the risk of death is most great in the first month of birth, especially if the mother has died. Many women in Malawi do not have essential items to support themselves and their babies in the post natal period.
A great way to celebrate motherhood and a special mum to be in your life is to donate the equivalent cost of a small gift of a blanket or outfit in the UK to the Little Blossoms Project who will use your donation to help fund the creation and distribution of Nurture Packs for new mums & babies which include. These packs are produced from new and second hand donations provided by UK women to support women in Malawi.
It was difficult to decide what items would provide the greatest benefit for new mums and babies in Malawi but after taking advice from midwives and volunteers on the ground, a typical Nurture Pack includes items such as;
A vest/hat for baby
Knickers/bra for mum
A towel/blanket
Antiseptic wash/soap
Guide to baby massage & baby care
You can donate any amount towards a Nurture Pack as every little counts. The pack costs around £10.00 to produce and distribute. You can donate safely via our Just Giving Page. Your donation is managed by Love Support Unite Africa, our partner charity.
