At Blossom & Berry, we believe something radical and profoundly simple:
Babies need food to survive—but love to thrive.
And how we care for babies in the first 1,001 days of life is the most powerful opportunity we have to shape the future.
In this blog, we’re exploring why infant mental health is emerging as a global priority across healthcare, education, philanthropy, and government—and how nurturing care, somatic connection, and nature-based practices can change everything. Whether you’re a policymaker, research student, charity founder, or corporate funder, this is your invitation to discover why investing in love is investing in life.
What Is Infant Mental Health?
Infant mental health refers to a baby’s capacity to feel secure, develop trust, regulate emotions, and form strong relationships in the earliest years of life—primarily through their relationship with their caregiver. From birth, babies are wired for connection. They communicate through the body, through sensation, through presence. They don’t need perfect parents—they need attuned, loving, consistent ones.
Why the First 1,001 Days Matter
Science now confirms what love has always known:
“The child’s first relationship is the foundation for all future development.”
— Harvard Center on the Developing Child
The first 1,001 days—from conception to age two—are the most critical period for brain development. During this time:
-
1 million neural connections form every second
-
Attachment patterns are shaped
-
Stress resilience is developed
-
Foundations for lifelong emotional, physical, and mental health are laid
Global Policies That Back This Up
Governments and global organisations agree:
-
UNICEF’s Nurturing Care Framework identifies five pillars essential to healthy child development: responsive caregiving, safety, nutrition, health, and early learning—all of which we teach through our programs.
-
WHO’s postnatal guidelines promote mental and physical care for mother and baby in the first six weeks—exactly where our baby massage and baby yoga support systems come in.
-
WAIMH (World Association for Infant Mental Health) argues every infant has the right to be emotionally nurtured and protected.
-
James Heckman, Nobel Prize-winning economist, famously showed that:
“Every £1 invested in early childhood development returns up to £13 in long-term social and economic benefits.”
In other words, love saves money—as well as lives.
Our Work at Blossom & Berry: How We Support Infant Mental Health
We are proud to be one of the world’s leading providers of love-based education for the first 1,001 days. Our accredited training programs help individuals and organisations support babies and parents through:
Baby Massage & Nurturing Touch
We teach the neuroscience of safe, attuned touch—boosting bonding, reducing postnatal depression, and building secure attachment.
Baby Yoga & Developmental Play
Through joyful movement and co-regulation, we help babies and caregivers experience safety, fun, and emotional connection.
Tree Babies
Our nature-based wellbeing program reconnects parents and babies to the Earth, supporting parental mental health, reducing isolation, and deepening seasonal rhythm and sensory awareness.
We deliver this work globally—through teachers, partnerships, and direct intervention.
Case Studies: Our Global Impact
Our belief is simple: Love creates love.
And our practice? Put love into action.
Malawi: The Mother & Baby Initiative
In partnership with Love Support Unite, we trained local women in baby massage and nurturing touch. These women became infant mental health advocates, supporting hundreds of families with love, connection, and skill.
We also worked in a local hospital to introduce special needs massage for children lacking access to physical therapy.
Botswana: Teenage Mothers & Social Workers
We trained 30 social care professionals in infant massage as a therapeutic support for young mothers navigating trauma, stress, and disconnection—helping them reclaim safe, attuned parenting.
Colombia: Nurturing in the Face of Violence
Sandy Fuentes, our Blossom & Berry Mexico director, travelled to Colombia to teach health workers supporting children impacted by violence and trauma. She shared how touch can soothe nervous systems and rebuild trust in the body.
Palestine: Future Pips
We funded a safe space in an early years setting, allowing Palestinian parents to receive free baby massage classes—helping them reconnect with their babies in times of crisis and fear.
